France is a country whose metropolitan territory is situated in Western Europe and that also comprises different overseas islands and territories positioned in other continents. France is also connected to the United Kingdom by the Channel Tunnel, which passes beneath the English Channel.

France has been one of the world's leading powers since the latter half of the 17th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries, France built one of the biggest regal empires of the time, stretching crossways West Africa and Southeast Asia, importantly influencing the cultures and politics of the regions. France is a developed country, with the sixth or eighth biggest economy in the world. It is the most visited country in the world, receiving 82 million foreign tourists annually. France possesses a large range of landscapes, from coastal plains in the north and west to mountain ranges of the Alps in the south-east, the Massif Central in the south-central and Pyrenees in the south-west. The culture of France has been shaped by its geography, by deep historical proceedings, and by foreign and inner forces and groups.
